The Mistake

Madrid, 2019
Each initial sample holds a glimpse of a larger work of art, waiting to be uncovered. It is my responsibility to discover and bring it to light. This particular work explores the relationship between two materials—clay and fabric—highlighting their contrasting qualities. The clay, fragile, damp, and unpredictable, adds an element of uncertainty to the creative process. Every material involved plays a vital role in shaping the final piece.

Allowing the clay to dry naturally, left to its own destiny, reveals the most authentic form that was envisioned from the start. This process often brings unexpected surprises—what we sometimes call "happy accidents"—that transform the work into something entirely different from what was initially planned.

In one such moment, an error caused a new greenish layer to form. The fabric became embedded in the clay, and the paper fused with it. These "mistakes" did not diminish the piece; rather, they enriched it, adding complexity and depth. The unexpected chaos brought about by the error made the work far more precious than it might have been without it.
